Got cool links? Share them on our wiki…

One of the great ways to use the Commons wiki is to share your external links.  Maybe you’re working on a group project and need to organize your on-line resources.   Or you’ve done some individual research, and have a wiki page full of links others might find useful.   Tag your page so others know about it.  They can add their links too, and their annotations, and the wiki can grow organically.

New to wikis?  Follow this link to see how to create hyperlinks.

Check out how our wiki authors are using lists of hyperlinks as the backbone of their pages:

  • Cool Tools for Teachers – As its title suggests, the page is loaded with links to citation managers, free quiz generators, blogs, wikis, and other useful links for pedagogy.

Have some links you can add to any of these sites?  Pages only get better when more authors get involved and share what they’ve learned!

Adding Tags to Wiki Pages

Hello wiki users:

I am the new Wiki Specialist (aka  “the Wiki-Wrangler”) and I have been spending time categorizing our wiki pages on the Commons.  To facilitate this effort, we made three small changes that should make accessing wiki pages easier.

We added the “Categories” option on the Sidebar, under the Navigation Tab.  Clicking on this will take the user to a page that shows all subcategories of our main Category:All in alphabetical order.categories

To encourage tagging and folksonomy, we added an input box at the bottom of each page that allows contributors to easily add tags.  Here is a screenshot showing the Add Tag box as it now appears, directly under the “Authors” section:Add Tag

We will soon have a tag cloud that allows easy access to categories.  We hope to put it on the sidebar, but work is still in progress.  For now, you can see a working prototype at https://commons.gc.cuny.edu/wiki/index.php/Front_Page

Here’s a screenshot:

Tag Cloud

Important Note: For a new tag (or category) to appear in the cloud, the tag itself needs to be tagged under our Main Category – “All”.  Click on the new tag, scroll to the bottom of the page, and enter “All” and click “Add Tag”.  Hope this makes sense.

Drop me a message if you have any questions.
